DISCnordic: personality tests in HR is about building basis for good dialogues

In the world of recruitment and company development, personality type tests can be a way to ensure diversity in the team and to achieve better results in all organizations. DISCnordic, with many years of expertise in HR, organised a trainnig session in HUONE Copenhagen’s popular room, Nyhavn, and has shared some knowledge on the matter.

DISCnordic has many years of experience in the Human Resources area, including personality tests. In this interview, HUONE Copenhagen spoke with Michael Giroux-Drejer, a partner and a senior consultant of DISCnordic, about why exactly these tools are important in the recruitment and management of a team.

What are the main focus areas of DISCnordic?

“DISCnordic primarily focuses on offering test tools for professionals in the HR sector. Our solutions are validated and tested, and the tools are designed to create better relationships and achieve better results in all organizations and at all levels.”

Why is there a need for a personality test in recruitment processes?

“In our view, a recruitment process is about gathering as many “pieces” on the candidate as possible, so that you have the best possible decision-making basis. Recruitment is a puzzle, which should consist of many pieces, each of which can provide some different nuances to the overall picture.

One of these pieces may be a personality test. And if it is used correctly, it can help form the basis of good and open dialogue. In our view, it is about understanding how to work with the tool. A personality test is not the full “truth” about a candidate. A personality test is statistical, for example, the result that comes out of the candidate’s conservation and the hypotheses it gives. The task then becomes to test these hypotheses and ask the candidate openly about what he/she can recognize. In this way, a personality test can help form the basis for a good dialogue, where you might get around some corners that you might or might not have gotten to.”

Can you give an example of how your customers use your advise and tools?

“In addition to the recruitment process, there are many customers who use our tools for the development of managers, employees, or teams. The strength of our tools is in working with relationships. Whether it is in connection with team members, management development, or something else, it is not the most important thing. It’s about getting to know the colleagues you work with and the dynamics that arise in that interaction.”

Can several of the same personality type work well together?

“Whether or not a relationship works relies on the personality types to only a certain level, as there are other things that come into play, such as experience, education, and how we relate to other people. People who are very similar to each other can have great challenges if they are not aware of their common challenges. Two similar types may quickly agree on solutions but fail to explore other options. The same can be true of the collaboration between two very different people. If they do not see the strengths in their diversity, then it quickly becomes a struggle to get one’s way or maintain the existing. If, on the other hand, they have a common understanding of each other’s strengths and challenges, then the difference can be turned into a more effective relationship.”

What is the advantage of organising your training course at HUONE?

HUONE is the right choice for us. In part, the location is top notch. Close to the metro, the airport, the motorway and several hotels in the area, which provides good opportunities for those of our students who need overnight accommodation.
There are also good parking conditions for those arriving by car. In addition to the location, the layout of the premises offers an experience in itself, to the great excitement of the course participants. For me as a consultant and trainer, it is of vital importance that all the AV equipment works, and it does. The catering is also top-notch. Breakfast, lunch, and snacks are of very high quality, both in terms of variety and options. We have tried many different course locations around Denmark, and HUONE is absolutely the best”
